Roberts out, Conference tourn underway

Sophomore sensation Brandie Roberts will be out the rest of the season due to a knee injury. Roberts was fouled hard and took a unfortunate fall during our last regular season game last Saturday against Lindenwood, thus ending her season all too quickly. Roberts MRI showed a shot meniscus which is lodged in the back of her knee, while blocking view of her ACL. At this point the doctor is uncertain of the amount of damage to her ACL but does think it is torn. He'll will not be able to determine the severity until he goes in to operate. We are obviously hoping for the "best case" scenario in this situation. Please keep Roberts in your prayers as she has a battle ahead of her.
The stays positive...with Roberts out the team is respoding! Sophomore Courtney McCartney filler the starting spot last night in our first round conference game against...Lindenwood. Senior Erica Ferguson led all scorers with 16 points (3-4 from beyond the arc!) and 6 rebounds. Senior Hillary Adams chipped in 11 points as Sophomore Katie Bond added 10 points and 7 rebounds. Freshman standout holly Switzer player a great game contributing 12 points (also 3-4 from the arc!) and 5 rebounds. This was a great team effort as everyone on the bench played and contributed to another great win. The game ended 72-41 in our favor!
Next up...round 2 against Baker Saturday night at 7pm at home! And tonight...the MEN TAKE ON EVANGEL IN ROUND 2 ...GOOD LUCK TO MEN!!! We'll be there to support you!

Thank you SENIORS!!!

Last night was an emotional game as we recognized our 6 seniors during our last regular season game. We beat Lindenwood at home 98-58 and the seniors led the way. Scoring was led by Seniors Jessica Stewart and Haley Stockton who each connected on 3 trey's. Both ended with 13 points and Stockton also pulled down 7 boards and went 4-4 from the free throw line. Fellow Senior Hillary Adams threw in 10 points while Senior Erica Ferguson dished out 4 assist. The underclassman followed the senior leadership and kept the game going as Junior Ashley Patton went 3-3 from behind the arc and Sophomore Brandie Roberts ended with a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. We ask that you keep Roberts in your prayers as she went down in the second half with a knee injury. As of now we are unsure of the results but are staying positive that it will be nothing serious!
I'd like to take a moment to thank each ot our seniors for their hard work and leadership they put out each and everyday! You all have paved a road to greatness throughout your time here at Jewell and I am so happy I was able to become apart of the Billy Jewell family this year and witness first hand all your hard work and determination. Each of you have taught me something I will always remember and I thank you for that.
Erica F.-You are the hardest worker I know-you are an inspiration!
Hillary-The fight in you is incredible and your desire for greatness is contagious!
Jessica-Your heart and passion is the glue to this team-You are truly one of the best leaders I've seen!
Haley-You just might be the strongest person I know! You have been through so much this year and my prayers are always with you and your family. You are such an encouragement and your dedication to the team is inspiring!
Erica A.-Im sorry sorry you had to sit out this year due to your knee but you have been such a encouragment to the team day after day and you are such a blessing!
Kelsey-You have taught me...so many new words! :) You and your wittiness can make any situation laughable. You will make a great coach and Im so glad I had the opportunity to work with you.
SENIORS thank you for all you do. It has been such a blessing being apart of your lives and I wish you all the best of LUCK!!! Lead the way and Let's go win conference TOURN!

Big WIN at Evangel!!!

Well if you weren't able to make the game last Thursday at Evangel you missed an exciting one! Our girls came our ready to play and on fire! The had determination in their eyes and they didn't stop until the final buzzer! We played a great game on both sides of the floor and everyone made a contribution! We were all on the same page and it showed. Shooting star Hillary Adams led the way with 14 points. Although EU tried to take the trey away from Adams she answered by hitting 3-5 from behing the arc in key moments of the game that really ignited the Jewell fire! Senior Erica Ferguson played incredible defense on sharp shooter Caitlin Russell from Eu to limit her to only ONE 3 for the game...and forcing her to throw up off balance hail maries! Ferguson followed the game plan and made Russell put the ball on the floor and forcing her to 5 turn overs! Senior Jessica Stewart went head to head with EU point guard Ashley Luko and won the battle. Stewart's intense defense and leadership on the floor held Luko to only 6 points and kept her from driving the lane. Stewart can shoot the ball as good as anybody and has showed that the past few games as she has taken on more of a scoring role...don't get me wrong she is still dishing out assist after assist but she is stepping up and focusing more on the rim but knocking down shot after shot. Stewart ended the game with 13 points (two 3's). Sophomore Brandie Roberts had her work cut out for her and she succeeded with flying colors. She grabbed 9 boards and tossed in 11 points...went 5--5 from the cherry stripe, two of which were late in the game to give us a two point advantage over the Crusaders. Sophomore sensation Katie Bond and Standout Freshman Holly Switzer gave solid minutes of making things happen on the floor. Both played with tough and made key passes to get the ball in the hole. Winning this game mades us tied (with EU) for FIRST in the conference race.

Ferguson on FIRE-GU game finallay played

Last night we played the long awaited game at home against graceland. After being cancelled twice previously we were ready to get this game in. We started out the first half pretty well but GU's guards kept them in it. They were relentless on driving the paint; they are by far the quickest guards in conference and can be lethal if you don't stop penetration. GU fought back to a 30-35 half time score. Senior Erica Ferguson was on fire tonight defensively and offensively. She led with 9 boards at halftime-4 of them offensive and 3 counted for immediate putbacks.
The second half we put on a great team effort with Ferguson leading the way and getting everyoen going. She ended the game with 22 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 assist and those stats don't even emphasize her efforts on defense-her best played game of the year. Sophomore Brandie Roberts wasn't far behind as she worked for every point she got battling in the paint. She stayed poised and ended with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Sharp shooting senior Hillary Adams chipped in 15 points and hit a couple 3's to give us momentum to take off in the second half, while Senior Jessica Stewart directed traffic and dished out 7 assist and threw in 10 points. The leadership of Stewart behind the ball gives us the lift we need to be successful; she not only runs the team offensively but locks down on defense day in and day out.
Up next...we travel to Evangel on Thursday. The Cardinals are sitting at first in the coference as we trail tightly in second. Last meeting with the Crusaders the game was hard fought but we fell short by 2 at the end. We look to come out hard and play tough every second. This is a game to NOT miss. It'll be exciting as both teams battle it out.

BIG game vs EU

Tonight we take on Evangel at home at 5:30pm. Tonight is a big game for us; we need to win to get back on track after two tough losses. Tonight will be a good battle on both sides and should be a fun game to watch. This one gets personal for me as I played and coached at Evangel prior to coming to Jewell, so it will be bitter sweet. Then men also play tonight at 7:30 which will also be a thriller I'm sure as they are tied in conference and battle it out tonight. We would love to see everyone there; come out and support your favorite teams!

It's a greay day to be a Cardinal.

Two tough loses but bouncing back

The past week and a half has been humbling for us. We took on Baker last Thursday and lost 60-62. The game was back and forth the entire game. We shot 33% for the game, 4-23 from behind the arch and only 20-28 from the cherry stripe...not yout typical Lady Cardinal performance on the offensive end. If anything we learned that when shots aren't falling we've got to dig deeper defensively and make better decisions with the ball. We have and open look at the basket with only 3 seconds left on the clock, unfortunately it didn't fall so we had no chance at over time and Baker won by 2 points. It's always tough to lost what was a very capabale game to be won especially at home...but an eye opener.
Saturday we traveled to Avila where we hoped for a better performance and outcome. We had high hopes but again we fell short losing 63-64 to a banked in 3 pointer by Avila...ouch! What hurt even more is Jessica Stewart made a half court shot right after the buzzer which would have put us up 1 to win it...the inrony of it all! Defensively we didn't play well together and again made key mistakes. We had open looks at the basket in the end but couldn't connect on any of them. If we didn't feel bad enough after Thursday's loss we did after this one. It's always touch to lose but even more tough when you know you had opportunities to win the game. So what do we do now? ...we bounce back!!! We have another battle ahead of us against Evangel tomorrow night at home. Another top team in conference comes in to our house trying to take us down but we ready and we'll respond as a team. We've been working hard in practice and taking time to reflect on some things that we could have done differently in the previous games. We feel the losses but we aren't dwelling on them...great teams bounce back and get ready to play and we're doing just that.
We hope to see you all at the game tomorrow night and we thank you for all your support! The women's game starts at 5:30 with the men's game to follow at 7:30; both will be great battles to watch!

It's a great day to be a Cardinal!
